What can you do with all the ideas churning around inside your head? Deciding which to focus on—and which even have the potential for success—can be confusing. Follow this plan for sorting through the possibilities:
- Identify some goals. On a sheet of paper, or a computer screen, list five to 10 ideas you’d like to explore. Key here is to do it quick. Don’t judge an idea as unworthy right off the bat. It might just be the stepping stone to a great idea.
- Select one item. Pick one idea on your list. Any idea will do. You’ll find out later if it’s the right one. Develop a plan for studying it, through coursework, reading, talking to experts, etc.
- Share your idea. This can be nerve-racking, but ask friends and colleagues what they think of your idea. Don’t back down too quickly, but listen to their questions and objections.
- Make a Decision. Once the interviews are done. You need to make a decision. A sheet of paper folded in half length-wise can help. Write “Pros” on one side and “Cons” on the other. List what you heard on the pro side or con side. Before you unfold the paper, prioritize the pros on one side and the cons on the other. Now, unfold the paper. Which pros and cons stand out? Now answer two questions regarding the idea: What do you think? And, how do you feel? Decide.
- Get to work. Once you’re convinced that your idea holds promise, commit to bringing it to life. Be ready for opposition, and be certain you’re willing to stay the course.
Some of you golfers might find parallels in the above to your pre-shot routine. Hmm…but, don’t spend too long as that is a topic for another discussion.
Hope to see you in the fairway.
