How to Break 100: The Stance

Last week, we talked about the 4 key shots needed to break 100. Here’s the first part on how to execute those shots. It all starts with the correct grip and set-up routine.

First the grip: the key here is to place the left hand (for a right-handed golfer) on top of the grip so that your wrist is on top of the grip. The left thumb will extend down the right side of the grip (about 1 o’clock). This should make it easy for your left arm and the club shaft to form a straight line from left shoulder to club head. The palm of the right hand needs to cover the left thumb with the right palm facing the same direction as the clubface.

Next is the set-up routine: After placing your grip on the club, put the clubhead behind the ball with the face of the club pointing at the target. Now bend slightly from your hips and let your left arm become fully extended. Place your feet about shoulder-width apart after the club is behind the ball. The routine is grip on, club behind ball bending from the hips, extend left arm, and set your feet. This will help your find a consistent starting position which starts to produce consistent shots.
