Expert Packing Tips for Your Golf Trip to Scotland or Ireland

So, you’ve decided you are going to Scotland or Ireland for a life changing golf trip. Now, you find yourself wondering what to bring. Here is a quick helpful list of what to bring and what to leave at home.

Bring

  • Golf balls, lots of ‘em. Heather eats them alive and they are much cheaper in the States.
  • Rain gear. Don’t go cheap. Make sure the rain gear is waterproof, not water resistant. You will thank me later.
  • Rain gloves. They get tackier when moist. Have them at the ready in case of a sudden downpour. Also, play at least a couple rounds in them at home to get used to the feel.
  • Layers, long sleeve microfiber shirts, a vest or two. Keep the core warm and the rest will follow.
  • One stocking hat, in case you catch one of those 45 degree windy days.
  • Two pairs of golf shoes. At least once, you will find one pair soaked and in need of a day to dry out. While you’re at it, a couple spare sets of laces could come in handy.
  • Socks, warm and thick and lots of ‘em. Do you really think laundry is getting done during the trip?
  • A lightweight carry bag. You are either going to employ a caddy or hoof it yourself. Don’t be THAT guy with the 50 lb. cart bag.
  • Sunscreen. When it doesn’t rain, it can be quite sunny. Also, sunscreen helps reduce windburn. Use it even when the sun isn’t out to keep from looking like a tomato.
  • An optimistic, positive mood blended with a sense of adventure. You are on VACATION! Be ready to play no matter what the weather looks like.
  • A generous soul. Caddies work hard for you and your massive slice. Tip well and buy a couple pints after the round.
  • Advil, Tylenol, etc. Either the walking or the drinking is bound to catch up with you. Be prepared.
  • A power adaptor, plug adaptor for the UK.
  • Proof of your handicap (GHIN, etc.). Several courses in Ireland and Scotland do have a minimum handicap requirement and request proof – especially St. Andrews.

Leave Home

  • Umbrellas. Absolutely of no use on a links course.
  • Multiple golf shirts. Between layering and purchasing new shirts on your trip, you only need a couple.
  • Yardage finders/GPS. Your caddy knows every yardage and the club you should hit. Trust in him.
  • Your American ego. The Irish and Scottish appreciate us Yanks, but will not stand for your superiority complex.
  • Work. It ain’t happening. Unplug and enjoy.
  • Shorts. Sorry, play the odds.
  • Sport jackets, unless you plan on doing some fine dining. Most places have finally relaxed.
  • All the crap that is piling up in your golf bag. Start fresh on the trip. All that stuff adds weight.
  • Those one or two clubs that you hardly ever use (64 degree wedge? Really?).
  • Low cholesterol levels and a healthy, pink liver….remember, you are the golf trip of a lifetime!

Now, pack well and have a great time. Be sure to take lots pictures especially of the people to help you remember the name of your caddy and the friendly chap you met at the pub years later.
