Have you seen The Mentor Project? It’s Charles Schwab’s current marketing effort to entice golfers to look at their investment portfolio and decide their future, hopefully in Schwab’s favor, while they take a golf lesson. Setting the marketing schtick aside for a moment, the first episode provides solid advice.
Tom Lehman’s question to Kevin Streelman gets to the heart of the first episode when Tom asks, “Did you play your best?” While Kevin felt good about his 19th place finish at the Player’s Championship, he stopped in his tracks and admitted that he hadn’t played his best. Tom replies, “You know how good you can be. You’ve got to say it and got to go for it.” How good can you be?
The same goes for me. Whether I’m teaching a SNAG class to a group of ladies or their grandchildren, trying to grow a business, or be a good husband, father, or grandfather, the question I ask myself at the end of the day is, “Did I do my best?” If I have to admit with Kevin that I really didn’t do my best that day, then I need to restate my goal and define a plan to get there. So, what’s my plan?
Good question. Perhaps like many, I spend too much time thinking about being a good husband instead of being a good husband. Or, maybe I think too much about breaking 80 instead of just taking 80 good golf swings. So, what’s my goal? What’s my plan to get there?
Change my thinking. Forget the goal. Get wrapped up with my team. Stop daydreaming. Execute the plan. And, one last thing…
Take my best swing at life – today.
