Golf is Too Hard! Tradition or Truth?

Ten years ago, two PGA Tour players got an idea to develop a way to help people of all ages get in and stay in the game. Their ideas focused on having fun executing four different golf strokes in a variety of games each producing feedback designed to help the beginner learn the game. Their methodology is drastically simplified from what is often imparted in beginner golf clinics and is easier to remember. Let me explain.

  • Four Different Swings. The courses teach the Roll swing (putt), chip swing, pitch swing, and launch (full) swing with sufficient attention to each swing’s purpose and proper technique without getting too dry. It’s easy to play a little and teach a little. Note: the methodology focuses on teaching beginners to swing the club and not worry about hitting the ball and the larger club head and balls help.
  • Fewer Instructions. Since beginners have lots to learn, the instruction methodology relies on short word cues to focus student’s attention on the keys they need to remember for each swing. For example, the student learns to take a stance by hearing, “Stand up straight. Bow to the ball. Relax your knees.” Sounds a lot easier than telling the student, “Straighten your back as you bend over at about 30 degrees and stick your rear end up in the air while you bend your knees.” With the new method, the beginner is able to take a proper stance more quickly – every time.
  • Feedback. The methodology uses lots of tools to provide feedback. The hoop clock, SNAGaZoo, Snapper, and Roller brush all provide sight, sound, and feel reinforcing each swing’s word cues. Scoring points is another type of feedback. By hitting a variety of targets, the beginner achieves successes along the way that Builds Confidence – Day 1.
  • FUN. The focus is on playing games. Whether it is learning how to hold the club, make a proper turn, take a proper stance, or know how far to swing the club for each shot type it’s all done by playing games. Real honest-to-goodness playing. Having fun. Making up the rules of the game as we go. But, each of the games has a purpose in helping the student understand and remember the four swings, their purposes, and word cues.

Some will counter that learning golf can’t be that easy. Tradition says that “Golf Is Hard” and unfortunately many have been stayed away from the game or quickly left after their first season. We ask, “What’s more important: more golfers playing the game or following traditional instruction methods?”

The new methodology works. It is called Starting New at Golf or SNAG. It was developed by golf professionals Wally Armstrong and Terry Anton over ten years ago. Since then it has been growing in popularity around the world as the best way to teach the game to beginners.

“SNAG is the greatest invention in golf in the last 50 years.”
