“He’s really grinding out there on the course today.”
How many times have you heard a sportscaster use this phrase when referencing NASCAR drivers or equestrian riders? Never! Ever hear an announcer describe downhill skiers as anything less than absolutely exhilarating? Not going to happen! Ron Howard’s new movie about Formula 1 race car drivers is called RUSH for a reason. We’re drawn to watch stuff that’s exciting and thrilling. We want to do stuff that’s fun.
Professional golfers play on the most immaculate golf courses in the world, view some of the most spectacular scenery, and walk on stage to the applause of fans even when they miss hit shots. So, why do golf announcers continue to trip over themselves in telling us how one Pro after another is really “grinding” out there today? It doesn’t sound like something I want to watch or DO!
Phil Mickelson, one of the real showmen playing on Tour, announced plans this week to shorten his playing schedule next year. For some it is hard to think of anything that could be more exciting than stepping onto the Old Course at St. Andrews or the Golf Links at Pebble Beach. But, there are other things like family, health, and business that call his attention. Who will take his place?
Chi Chi Rodriguez was one of the greatest golf showmen ever and reminded us each week that it’s just a game. Though not a professional golfer, Bill Murray made fun of the stuffed shirts in his best loved role as Carl Spangler and continues to share his thoughts each year at the AT&T. Years ago at the Masters, Gary McCord tried to liven things up, but was handed his walking papers by the Masters Committee. Lee Trevino often played pranks on fellow competitors and made time for the fans even during play. Bubba Watson encouraged fan noise at last year’s Ryder Cup. At the Masters earlier this year, Arnold Palmer signed autographs for scores of fans seated on a chair that was brought to him. It’s evident they love the game. But, who will take their place?
Will Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth, or Keegan Bradley? What about the ladies’ side of the stage? Would it hurt the game to have Stacey Lewis, Paula Creamer, or Morgan Presell smile? I sure wish that Christina Kim was around more. She’s exudes fun. We could digress and debate the pros and cons of stopping Caddy Races at TPC Scottsdale or self-serving fans shouting “mashed potatoes” after tee shots, but those sidestep the point here.
Golf is part of the entertainment business. People are seeking entertainment they can personally enjoy with their friends on Saturday morning at the Club AND Sunday afternoon relaxing on the couch. The golf industry needs entertainers who are willing to take a risk, step out of their comfort zones, and show us the way to have a little fun.
Hey, Mr. Finchem, now that your PGA Tour is exerting more control over the so-called “silly season,” would it hurt to let your minions liven things up out there on Tour?
Signed,
Tired of watching the “weekly grind!”
